Great story, and looking forward to learning more & sharing ideas now that I'm following you on Twitter. I'm also the "organized chaos" type and have many interests. I spent much of my 20s thinking that was a negative trait. Now I know it's what makes me special (an an "awesome-special" kind of way).

Amazing.
I hope everyone was pleased with the results. I realize social media is difficult to measure, as opposed to standard circulatioin figures from newspapers and magazines, but I think social media tours will prove a powerful editorial force.

I have already been called by a couple of businesses that are following along with the conversation going on now and they too want to know these answers. So let's ask and start the dialogue. Thanks for the great post Christine, and this set the stage for the rest of us. We will have a wonderful experience and a great time. I'm glad to find out that HTA is doing things to entice visitors coming from China.

We have to compete with Hainan Island as a Chinese tourist destination. What is HTA doing to market Hawaii as a better place to go? What makes us unique? I think that what you're doing with the bloggers (i.e.: showing local culture) is a good start. You're right about not having any short term efffects, but long term is what counts.

Re: Pushing Proverbial Pencils

kerouac called it 'spontaneous prose' - think you've found a gorgeous outlet for the things that don't fit the other areas.

I get a raffle ticket for bringing in my bags to Trader Joe's. It's really not much of an incentive, because I find that I'm usually the only customer in the store who brought in her own bags. I think charging a small fee for dispensing disposable plastic bags would be really effective in persuading customers to bring in their own bags. But you're right--there would be rioting here in the US.

Re: Kris Krug and Danielle Sipple are getting Shanghaied

great idea! i can neither write nor look good on camera but ill think of something how to contribute :-)

Re: Kris Krug and Danielle Sipple are getting Shanghaied

Wow, that's amazing! Most of the time, it's by PR professionals. Sadly, it's those same people who follow me, expect me to follow them back, don't tweet about anything that's relevant to me, and then don't respond when I try to engage them. There is no relationship, and there's no reason why I should follow them.

It sounds like you have some sort of actual relationship with everyone you follow, regardless whether or not you've met them in real life or not. It's something that 'Social Media experts' don't get, it's something that some PR people don't get and it's certainly something that spammers don't get.

Relationships are what Twitter is about, but people expect them to be formed out of thin air. They think by simply following other tweeters, they've established some form of connection with their followers and that those followers will automatically retweet everything they post. They think that their 10,000 followers are 10,000 actual connections that they've made, when in fact they have 10,000 pointless updates being forced into their twitter feed. Having a lot of followers is great, but it's a horrible way to measure your effectiveness as a tweeter.

The point is, I think your reasons are 100% legitimate, and I wish that more PR people, "Social Media Experts' and spammers would read articles like this before mass following everyone.

Sorry about the rant.

Re: Kris Krug and Danielle Sipple are getting Shanghaied

ok!
